Donovan Engineering – Heavy Metal Thunder

  Posted by paulasworld , 11 April 2012 · 115 views

We recently had the pleasure of visiting Donovan Engineering to watch them machine an engine block from billet. They are in the process of perfecting the machining process.

Posted ImageThey start with a 500 pound billet.
Posted ImageDonovan uses Mastercam to design and program the blocks.
Posted ImageEfficient roughing is crucial to removing the unwanted 350+lbs of metal from the block.
Posted ImageEfficient material removal can mean monster chips.
Posted ImageDonovan uses OptiRough toolpaths on the block: 3” cutter and a .150” engagement.
Posted ImageFinished and sleeved, the block is ready to go.
