We recently had the pleasure of visiting Donovan Engineering to watch them machine an engine block from billet. They are in the process of perfecting the machining process.
They start with a 500 pound billet.
Donovan uses Mastercam to design and program the blocks.
Efficient roughing is crucial to removing the unwanted 350+lbs of metal from the block.
Efficient material removal can mean monster chips.
Donovan uses OptiRough toolpaths on the block: 3” cutter and a .150” engagement.
Finished and sleeved, the block is ready to go.
