Murlin !

Hardware and OS repairments is my hobby and second profession BTW and beeng absent here for 4 days I don`t know what `s going on so I will be short and `ll speak in general .

1.If you do not have a good basic knowledge of PC ,

call the professional !.

You can do silly things just because of a little understanding of what you are doing .

I can f%^& you a new hard disk in 10 seconds at the stage of assembling it to PC .

Techinicians exist for the people who are not specialists.

You don`t repair your TV set or video ?

Who told you that pc is more simple ?

2.There are too many causes for HDD to not work properly and unformat NOT ALWAYS WILL DESTROY VIRUS .

And repartitioning too.

quote:

My brother wiped my HDD with some super , duper, wipe program that the military uses so he says there is no way I have a boot sector virus.

And whiping of a disk also

If you are interested I can be more specific ,but I am not a GOD and can only guess what`s going on your PC.

3. A guy I used to know used to say smthn that I like:

If you have a virus don`t became panicky.

It means don`t make hurried ,nervous acts and moveslike whiping the info, changing disk, reinstalling Windows just because you have this litttle thingy.

BTW ,what`s the name of a virusor worm of your`s?

I bet you don`t know !

I wrote before that to feel safe in the new reality of Blaster type viruses you must have patched OS, firewall configured right ,good updated antivirus and don`t use Outoolk or Outllok express .

Use mozilla or netscape mailer or some other.

Well ,let`s suppose you have a virus .

What would I do .

I will check first that your hard disk assembled right using specific screws ,jumpered right, having no contacts with other metal parts with it`s rear and siting in it`s place free from deformations ,but tight .

And that cabling is safe and right.

If you have fat32 file system then I will boot from a good, free from viruses Win98 repair floppy disk or formated win98 boot disk with a scandisk and made a scandisk with a surface scanning .

If you have bad clusters the disk is bad .

Return it and change for other one if you have such a posssibility .

Most HDD producers have 3 years for this option.

Now if a scandisk will say that it has no bad blocks I will boot from the antivirus emergency disket and will scan for viruses .

All the floppy diskets must be made in the clean pc and be entered to yours with the windows opened protecting you from virus writing to it.

If it will fing a virus or some I will write their names and the file names or places it found them.

I will visit a site of this antivirus on the clean machine and scrpulously read all the info about this viruses their principes of working and recomendations about their cleaning !

Than I will try to clean according to recomendations and once more check a system.

If your first partition is NTFS it is simillar but a bit more difficult.

I want to tell a couple of rules that I made for myself .A lot of people like Bullines Or Rick Damiany can criticise them and I agree with them .

This rules are not universal .

This is from my humble experience only.

Use at your own risk:

1.Always make the first partition (system partition Fat 32, it is far more easy to repair.

2.Always save the image of your partition table .

If you don`t know how, the antivirus programs like Macaffee will do it for you while making Emergency floppy disks .

3.For such a cases always use clean floppies ,even use the new one ,that`s better.

4.ALWAYS DO THIS WHEN YOUR PC IS CLEAN FROM VIRUSES!

5.Never use Outlook or outlook Express .

6.Use Mozilla as your browser .

7.Never open the files wilth extentions like exe,

com,bat,pif,scr,vbs.vba,doc,xls,htm,html and more,expecially from unknown correspondent .

8.don`t allow the html be opened as html ,configure it to be opened as a plain text

9.don`t allow the cdrom disks be configured to autoload

9b. never allow the autodialing from your PC,

always manually connect to net !

10 Always use god configured firewall and trusted updated and configured right antivirus like norton or Makaffee .

11.NEVER REPLY TO SPAM ESPECIALLY TO click here to avoid getting this message once more type things.

12.avoid download programs from internet especially from the suspicious places!

13. If you think you have virus don`t panick.

Deattach your pc from the internet ,

check your pc with antivirus and if there is a virus proceed with recomendatoins for this specific virus.

14. always backup your data.(the backuping of whole pc is not so simple and not alwais is the best solution) !

Backupping or ghosting of all your system will not always work especially when you have win XP.

If you will learn a lot about pc, hardware ,repairing ,you will became the freak like me ,that`s always come to his friends with a special repairment handbag and drinking beer or vodka with an opened PC near him.

Othervice Just take it easy ,this is not the greatest disaster.

I wish you not to have a bigger problem !

Just relax a bit ,cool yourself and without hurry

do what you think you need to do ,but don`t rush at once, have a cigarette, drink some coffee or the better leave this for tomorrrow.

The better ask someone whom you trust to do this for you, but to the man who does this as his routine job like some admin or other specialist .

I didn't get a chance to read it....

heh...I didn't mean to make you angry bro. frown.gif

What did I do? It wasn't intended, and I appologize if I offended you or anyone else on these Forums in any way.

You gave me alot of good tips and I appreciate it.

We found out that the hard drive failed after it was turned on for a while. After it cooled down it would boot up fine like nothing happened.

I did not mean to put you on spot or anything when I was asking you about viruses.

I was told I had a virus and so since you ARE some super genius at this stuff I asked you to give your input.

Who knew a 1 year old Maxtor 60 GIG would fail.......

I can assure you this renegade HDD that caused all this frustration will be dealt with swiftly and harshly....I must make an example of it for the other HDD's to shape up or this is what happens biggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gif Film at 11:00...

Peace cheers.gif
