Facing finish pass options

Hello everyone, I am new to the forum and I have a question

 

Is there a way to increase the rpm and decrease the feed rate in a facing operation in Mastercam X6?  

I am aware that you can change the feed using the tool path editor but I would also like to increase the rpm to get a better finish and I don't see that option other than editing the actual code. can anyone please help me with this?

I don't think, but you can create another op with different feeds and speeds right under your first op.

Is there a way to use two different ops and keep the tool from returning to the clearance height or the retract height and just go straight to the final z depth? I am programming for production and the extra tool motion will add more cycle time to each part.

Mastercam has many things that should have been instituted long ago even back in V9 but oddly enough, aren't.

The added it to contour toolpaths, and standard pocket finishing passes, but not pocket facing or standard facing; and then it only works on multi-passes, not depth cuts.

Oh well, who doesn't want twice as many toolpaths in the operations manager anyways, looks like you are doing more work right ?! :laughing:

This is actually fairly easy to accomplish if you know how to make some simple post edits.

 

The key with using the Toolpath Editor for making changes to generated operation is using the "Canned Text" function. In this example I used the Canned Text function to allow you to modify the spindle speed by outputting the Spindle Speed as a local variable (variable #100). This allows you to output the initial spindle speed as a variable value, then every time the Speed command is issued, we output it as a reference to a variable.

 

With Canned Text, we probably don't need to have access to such a great range of adjustment, but I wanted to show what is possible using Canned Text.

 

The other great thing about this modification is that it will work with any version of Mastercam, even V9 (shudder).

 

The only thing that I would consider adding would be some logic to check the actual RPM value, compare it to the Max RPM, and swap out the Max RPM if that value is exceeded. The current logic just outputs an equation to override the SS value.

To use the override ability, you would use the "Toolpath Editor", and use the "Canned Text, With" option. The override is currently setup to allow as low as 5% of the original SS value, to 200% of the original value, in 1% increments.

 

So to raise the SS, use any value over 100. Any value less than 100 would slow down the Spindle.

I agree that having it in the interface would certainly be easier.

 

And while I'm "relatively" young compared to some on here, I started using Mastercam 6.13 in 1997.

Hmm, if memory serves, the shop I was working in had 6.13 installed, and V7 was just released. I know I went through the process of upgrading from V7, to V8, then eventually to V9. I believe V9 was actually "released" in either late 2001 or early 2002. I think that V9 was around for at least 2 years, while everyone waited for X to come out. I certainly attended quite a few training classes on the older software versions that were put on by my reseller in the late 1990's...
