How to associate X9 in opening .step files as default?

Soooo, something that's been bugging me for a while.

We have X5, X7 and X9 on our systems, and are using X9 exclusively now.

But we get a .step file from a customer, and double click and X5 opens.

If I go into properties, only X5 is showing, so I click more, go to find X9 and click the .exe and save out, but still only 5 shows in the field, and only 5 opens when clicking the .step.

 

Any help please in changing this default is greatly received.

Had this problem before, think there is a registry fix for it. All I do now is just drag the .stp file into an open session of x9 and it opens!!!

Going the control panel/default programs/set associations doesn't fix it.

 

So it looks like a regedit then.

Please can someone spell out exactly what to do?

I copied this from a previous post

It works very well because it works with any file type Mastercam can open

I have X8 and X9 SolidWorks and SpaceClaim set up in my Send To menu

and I can open any CAD file with wihatever application I need at the moment

 

 

 

 

run the "shell:sendto"  from the window in the Start menu

 

then you can add X9 or any other exe file you like to the Send To menu in WIndows Explorer

 

then you can open that step file in X9, Solidworks X7, 8 or any other program you've added to your Send To menu

 

Its easy to do, and very useful..

Why not just right-click the .stp file/ open-with/select X9/ and check "use this to open all .stp files" (or however it's worded).

 

Or am I missing something?

I want 9 to open straight away.

I copy a step from an email to a usb drive, put the usb drive into the pc and just double click. But 5 opens at the moment.

I did this and it didn't work.

I even closed and re-booted the PC to see if the 9 had stuck in the registry and it had so I went G's route with the send to.
