We've recently switched from EnRoute to mastercam, in enroute for entry there is a toggle you press that turns on a "3D line" 

this allows the tool to move in space a determined distance into the material ramping in,

 

in mastercam it doesnt seem to matter what a add or subtract it always only looks like a straight plunge into the material...

 

looking for how to effectively ramp into the material over a short distance

Really comes down to the toolpath you are using. There are over 150 different operations in Mastercam and each one has their own way of doing things. Which specific toolpath are you using? Then someone can help point you in the right direction.
