Bug with backup

Maybe mentioned before, maybe not.

When (incremental) backup is enabled, there is some latency (sometimes remarkable, especially when using a network drive) between making the backup file and saving the Mastercam file. During this latency the user can interact with the user interface. The user shouldn't be allowed to do anything until the backup-save process has been completely finished. I just made a mistake because of this...

Not sure if that is perceived as a bug from the development standpoint. Latency may greatly vary from one environment to another. Lots of factors, from hardware to device drivers.

According to your testimony, it's likely that CNC coded the function to execute in a separate thread, what we call asynchronous operation. This makes sense because if incremental backup is set to an interval, and this interval is set short, and the latency big, then MC would become unusable depending on the file size and the network load at the time of the saving.

I may be wrong about this, but that's how I would design it to be as well.

It's not set to auto backup, that's a different story. It does this when pushing the "Save" button - creates an incremental backup of the old project and saves the new project. After selecting the file save, in my opinion, the cursor should turn into a hourglass and UI shouldn't respond until both backup and save are done.

I saved the file and thought it was done, so I made some temporary changes and only after that it did save, saving the temporary changes it shouldn't have saved.

I hear you. CNC probably coded it as an asynchronous function, that´s why you can work when it´s saving...

I never use auto backup as  it has burned me in the past with big files.

Autobackup was trying to write a big file.. I didn't realize it and keep working away

bad things happened

This was many years ago, but it was bad enough that I've never tried autobackup again

I use the incremental back up and route the backups to a fast solid state drive on my computer

That way the backup save is much faster than a regular save of the real file to the network

I've never had a problem using this method

How do you set up incremental b/u? I don't see that option in the configuration settings. I'm using X9

By default backup files go to your user folders

You can change their location at System Config/Files

I send mine to C:/X9_BAK  and C:\MC210_BAK

Be sure to clean the backup folders out occasionally

Left unattended, they will eat your hard drive
