4 Axis Lathe - Ideas for Clocking Parts

Recommended Posts

Hello eM,

Anyone have any bright ideas on how to clock parts on a 4 axis lathe in relation to pre-existing holes?

Below is an example of a part that has been pressed together.

There is some OD work that needs to be done with a live milling head in relation to the slot at 12 o'clock. The slot needs to be located and established as C0.

But it's not easy to locate. It seems like picking up one of the holes with an indicator, and rotating 90 degrees in C would be easiest.

It appears that picking up a hole would involve nothing more than sweeping it with an indicator in the axial position (indicator pointing towards the face of the part), adjusting the c-axis until the hole is lined up.

All ideas welcome.

Thank you

To be quick and painless I would position your c-axis @ 90 then use a drill or pin the same size as the hole  to get your part

as close as possible then fine tune your c-axis adjustment with indicator.

Yeah that sounds great - nice and simple.

Thank you

Setup a pin the size of the hole in the turret(on a toolholder), rapid close to the indexing position, open the chuck, insert your part, GO1 to the indexing position, close the chuck, GO1 out of the hole, rapid home(or to tool change position).

I did something similar, on an indexer, once with a part(military) that need some holes tapped at a certain angle from a face hole.
