Health reaction to coolant

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Hope everyone is happy and healthy.

Ive been having some health issues that seem to be related to the machine coolant.

Using Hangsterferrs s-500.

Get sinus pain, head aches, feeling sick and a rash on my legs. Is this something that anyone has experienced or am I barking up the wrong tree?

We have had some finish and tool life issues that seem to be tied to a weak mixture. I’ve since paid special attention w refractometer and mix. But, in the past the mix has been under the recommendation.

Could this be my health issue?

Its an open machine so evaporation into the shop air is an issue.

cheers

Curtis

I've had many issues with various brands of coolant. However, most of those issues weren't related to the chemicals in the coolant itself, but rather the 'bacteria which grows in the sump/coolant itself'.

  • How long has it been since your coolant tank has been emptied, fully cleaned, and replaced with new coolant? If you walk into the shop, and it smells like rancid coolant (funky smell), it is probably long past time to do a full coolant replacement. (However, you've also now got to dispose of that contaminated coolant! Don't pour it down the sewer!)
  • In all my coolant tanks, I try to make sure they are hooked up with a 'Skimmer' for catching the tramp oil, but also with an 'Aerator'. Get yourself a couple of 'aquarium air stones', with some clear plastic tubing, and a small air-pump. Getting some aeration in the coolant really helps minimize the formation of bacterial colonies.
  • Some people just have bad chemical reactions with certain brands of coolant. If Hangsterfer's isn't working for you, give Blaser Swisslube a try. I've had great luck with Blaser being non-toxic, not-reactive with Operator's skin.

@ 21 years ago, back before nitrile (or whatever you like) gloves were as prevalent as they are today, I had a bad skin reaction on my hands which were always wet with a coolant brand I no longer remember. Had rags to wipe my hands with but they were never entirely up to the task. When they got too slimy I went to the bathroom and washed them off. This went on for my first year there, and by the end of it my hands had broken out into a nasty rash of excema. I did get treatment for it, but by the time I left that job a year later  I lost all the pigment in my hands. No color in my hands all the way up to my wrists. They sunburn REAL easy now. In the 20 years since, I have never gone a day without wearing gloves. Makes it a bit of a PITA to feel finish quality, etc, but the alternative was so much worse.
