Video Card thoughts

So, i'm looking to upgrade the video card we have on our PCs - which is a Quadro K620...
Cpu, SSD, memory are great, see no reason to upgrade any of that, cept the video.

I'm looking for feedback on which card do you guys prefer that works well.   I was recommended a Quadro P1000.  I'll have to ask to see what kind of budget we have but...

RTX A4000 Here...I need the horsepower...

I am regretting not getting the 5000 but it's been "sufficent"

Why do you regret it? Im currently putting together a build that is 4k at the moment and I am debating if I want the rtx 5000 with double the ram.

edit:: my biggest problem with this software is verify. I do simple cuts on very large parts and verify drives me batty.

For what I do, th e4000 has been "okay" I just think when I put these in, if I could have gotten the 5000, my performace would be a bit better..

Believe me, this blows away the K4000 I previously ran..

I wouldn't shy away from card...

Would the better performing video card improve lathe regen speeds?   In mcam 2019, theyre quite fast, but in 2020-2022, they've slowed down by at least half while everything else runs good.

Doubt it.

Have you turned off the display of toolpaths while regenerating?

Well, no... but i do like seeing the update after creation / changing tool paths from a safety standpoint.  It sucks that the regen time is slower..... way slower than that of mills.

Check your power settings. 2 of our new workstations we're on recommended instead of high performance. I didn't understand why Camplete was faster on the older machine. Using performance made a huge difference.

I like using www.userbenchmark.com from time to time to find out if the performance is how it should be. It works comparing the performance of your cpu, gpu, ram and ssd to others with the same hardware. So you don't have to run seperate benchmarks.

But I don't if it would have solved your specific problem.

How many parts you guys do at one time? Big assembly?  For me I only do one part at a time, rarely open 2 mastercams at the same time, finish one then go to next one. I use Quadro P620, my monitor is a full HD, it works great. Just need a super strong CPU like 12700 something, I hate waiting.

I usually do one part at a time.  Sometimes I'll do a setup with anywhere from three to (most so far) 98 parts in an operation.  If you're asking about how many Mastercam windows I'll have open, I'll occasionally have one or two additional windows open with similar parts that I've done in the past, to reference details on how I did it.

Take the class 40 SSD and replace with a Samsung Pro 860 2TD drive and keep the Class 40 as a backup with the original OS should you ever need a clean slate to start with. Acronis is good for cloning the drive.

My only 2 cents addition would be that Mastercam is RAM (and cache) hungry. I got more or less the same system on my HP lappy with 128G of RAM. RAM is pretty cheap these days.

I actually got the latest gen i7 as this allowed 4 x 32G DIMS for heat control. It's a great tool.

I just got the lower tier of that same system (Precision 3660) a couple days ago, Nvidia RTX A2000 instead of your A4000, half the ram, half the HD space and an i7 instead of an i9

I couldn't be happier with it. I think the RTX series video card makes a huge difference.

One thing you should be aware of though, I had to go in to the Nvidia Control Panel and set the "OpenGL REndering GPU" from Auto Select to Nvidia RTX A2000.

Right now I have a model of a fixture up on the screen, with 5 part models, 5 clamps, screws, washers, pushers... Even with Translucency turned on I'm flipping this model around looking at it from all angles and it's so fast and smooth. It used to look like I was watching a slow flip book animation.

I said this before but maybe worth saying again...

12th gen intels are a huge step in performance over previous gens, more than we've seen recently. DDR5 RAM and PCIe 4.0 help a ton.

A Benchmark 3.0 time with a similar system above, 2:09 !!! I'm running a high end 10th gen system and I'm a minute slower. That's a massive gain!

...so ya, that setup will be good!
