By JOHN J. LUMPKIN

WASHINGTON (AP) - Football player Pat Tillman, who turned down a mulitmillion-dollar contract with the Arizona Cardinals to join the Army, was killed in Afghanistan, officials said Friday.

Tillman, who served with the Army Rangers, was 27.

"Pat knew his purpose in life," McGinnis said. "He proudly walked away from a career in football to a greater calling."

Several of Tillman's friends have said the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks influenced his decision to enlist.

"He viewed his decision as no more patriotic than that of his less fortunate, less renowned countrymen who loved our country enough to volunteer to defend her in a time of peril," McCain, a Republican, said in a statement.

Tillman played four seasons with the Cardinals before enlisting in the Army in May 2002. The safety turned down a three-year, $3.6 million deal from Arizona.

He made the decision after returning from his honeymoon with his wife, Marie.

Tillman's brother, Kevin, a former minor league baseball prospect in the Cleveland Indians' organization, also joined the Rangers and served in the Middle East. They committed to three-year stints in the Army.

Tillman's agent, Frank Bauer, has called him a deep and clear thinker who has never valued material things.

In 2001, Tillman turned down a $9 million, five-year offer sheet from the Super Bowl champion St. Louis Rams out of loyalty to the Cardinals, and by joining the Army, he passed on millions more from the team.

Tillman turned aside interview requests after joining the Army. In December, during a trip home, he made a surprise visit to his Cardinal teammates.

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound Tillman was distinguished by his intelligence and appetite for rugged play. As an undersized linebacker at Arizona State, he was the Pac-10's defensive player of the year in 1997.

He set a franchise record with 224 tackles in 2000 and warmed up for last year's training camp by competing in a 70.2-mile triathlon in June.

Tillman carried a 3.84 grade point average through college and graduated with high honors in 3 1/2 academic years with a degree in marketing.

"You don't find guys that have that combination of being as bright and as tough as him," Phil Snow, who coached Tillman as Arizona State's defensive coordinator, said in 2002. "This guy could go live in a foxhole for a year by himself with no food."

Tillman and his brother Kevin last year won the Arthur Ashe Courage award at the 11th annual ESPY Awards

I believe he was killed in battle. The casualties are low by any historic standards of war; a testiment to the expertise and professionalism of the US military.

Nonetheless, they all hurt, and this one is especially difficult.

I agree with machinemasterg: cheers.gif

Here's to you Pat. You will be missed and your sacrafice will never be forgotten.

It's almost unbelievable that in a time and society such as ours, he would give up the gold and the glory of a professional sport to stand up for what he believed in and to put himself in harms way to protect it.

God bless him and his parents for raising not only one but two kids with such strong convictions.

I appreciate that, Charles. Nice find, learned something new.

He's with the good Lord now.

A true American hero.

We owe much to Pat Tillman and all those who serve to protect and defend our national security.

To all those brave men and women in our armed forces >>> cheers.gif

Now THAT is selfless. We are currently collecting goods to send to one of the platoons in Iraq. They are local to my area, Selfridge Air National Guard. We are adopting all the enlisted guys that have no families to help them thru this. Of course the ones with families will also benenfit...

One of the most requested items is not food or smokes, but flea collars.Gives ya an idea of the conditions there.

If anyone local to Michigan area wants to send items , they will be shipped free of charge to overseas location. I will take monitary donations and use them at Sam's club to purchase quantity goods. This is not a solicitation, just an opportunity to help someone in need.

Far as i'm concerned, it's the least we can do for people with this kind of commitment and bravery for our country.

Sorry for the Hijack , Charles !!

Not just anyone can become a Ranger. In fact, 45% of the soldiers who start Ranger school, don't graduate. Pat Tillman is one accomplished individual. Army Ranger, honor student, professional athlete and patriotic American.

Pat, rest in peace...you deserve it! cheers.gif God bless the family and loved ones you left behind.

Pat also made his family swear an oath of silence. The Army was not pleased, as they wanted to use him as an Army Poster Boy. He stated that he was there to serve, not to be a celebrity. He didn't want special treatment, and didn't want anyone he served with to know he was who he was.

That, my fellow humans, is honor at it's finest. God Bless Family and Friends. Thank you for allowing me and my family the freedoms we so take for granted. cheers.gif

I received a letter yesterday from my 19 yr. old son in Iraq with the 1st CAV in Baghdad. He was in a QRF(Quick Reaction Force) to help some Marines in an ambush in Al Anbar on April 9th. He lost his best friend in the vehicle ahead of him to an RPG. He said he rushed to him, but he was already gone. They then loaded 4 other soldiers into the ambulance and tried to get them back to the Aid Station. They were then ambushed again by Iraqi civilians. They shot their way out of this mess and got back OK. He had the feeling that they were helping when they first got there in January, but since then it has been nothing but hatred for the troops. I think maybe it is time to flatten Fallujah and cut out all the negotiations. Our guys are nothing but sitting ducks now. We have the firepower-lets use it! If these people want their freedom, then THEY need to fight for it. This war has become another political football just like the one I was in- Vietnam. Enough of my soapbox- I just had to vent.

Pat Tillman is a true hero that I can only shake my head in awe. He never wanted recognition or press coverage of his decision to do the right thing for Liberty after 9/11. So many other undecorated heroes go unreported by the media which tends to focus in on the bad news, the drug use, steroids and bad examples in the limelight. But Pat is just one example of the courageous volunteer soldiers fighting overseas so we can enjoy freedom here at home, becuase if they werent there, the enemies of freedom would bring the fight to our shores as we have seen on 9/11. Fight on courageuos soldiers and we will stand behind you all the way! cheers.gif
