Engraving hardened steel

Hello,

We have to engrave D-2 steel, hardened to 58~60 Rc.

Our max RPM on our CNC is 10,000 (unfortunately).

We have to use a .020 dia.ball(.025 dia max),going

.010 deep.

Does anyone recommend any speeds and depth cuts.

We have been using .8ipm 20000rpm(on an older/diferent cnc)taking .001 a cut. We were getting unsatisfactory results(eg: time and cutter

breakage).

The cutters were solid carbide mini cutters w/ mega-T coating, stub length.

Any suggestions.

Thanks,

Paul

when we had similair situations . we would do the

engraving before hardening. if this is possible

it might help your situation . .001 depth of cut ,seams a little aggressive for that size of cutter . .0002" would be better. we bought a speeder head for our cnc . that could also help in the rpm .

Good Luck smile.gif

For that hardness I would sugest either an OSG FX Series E/M or a Robb Jack Mold and Die E/M. I've successfully cut RC 60 with them with very good tool life, albeit, I had 20,000 RPM to work with too which helps.

If the surface being engraved is flat, try tilting it about 10 degrees and likewise with the geometry in mastercam. That way using a ballnose you never cut with the center. I have used this method in the past for grease grooves on 4150 pht (28/32C) and O6 at about 48/52 and though dulling still occured breakage was greatly diminished.

I just realized how much I miss metal. wink.gif
