ROTARY 4TH AXIS TOOLPATH PROBLEM

hEY GYTS,

I PROGRAMMED MY PARTS TOOLPATH GOING X POSITIVE TO X NEGATIVE CUTS. AXIS OF ROTATION IS ON X. THE CUT IS FINE THIS WAY. BUT I HAD TO ROTATE THE PARTS 180 DEGREES AND REGENERATE DUE TO THE 4TH AXIS IS SET UP THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. THE TOOLPATH HAS A START POINT BUT IT IS CUTTING INSIDE TO OUTSIDE INSTEAD OF FROM START POINT OUTSIDE TO INSIDE. IS THERE A SETTING FOR X SOMEWHERE. I NEED -X TO POSITIVE X CUT.

THANKS

I used rotary 4 axis and picked the surfaces to drive the tool.

I programmed it with the 4 axis holding the part on the left side machining right to left on x axis of rotation. I loaded the pgm into the cnc and no problem on graphic run till I realized the 4 axis is setup for left to right cut. i guess we can just setup the 4 axis like it is programmed. I rotated the part 180 in mastercam 9.1 and regenerated the toolpaths so we could use the setup we had. When doing a backplot or verify the toolpath still machines right to left.

I can't figure out why I can't get the tool to run from the start point left to right.

Hello everyone.

We go the job rolling by mirroring the x and a axis on the machine. I still was unable to use mirror to program the part and remirror it back to have it cut the right direction. I know Gibbs asks you what side your 4 axis is on.

anyone know how to tell Mastercam that the 4th axis is on the right side. it does fine when the 4 axis is on the left side.

thanks

I lost a post. So much I posted. frown.gif

Gotta crash now. Remember you can circle mill a tram hole - after indicating the side of stock. Tram hole exactly half of Y axis stock and whatever x axis distance from the edgefinder-found side. Mimic that rotation at center of tram hole with the origin in MC [tram hole center coorinates located at MC origin]. Regen toolpaths...

OK, nevermind! biggrin.gif

Hey everyone,

Something kind of similar has been happening to my students. We programmed the 4th on the left side of the machine, and in CAM everything looks awesome, but when it runs the part comes out mirrored. The simulation and everything looks right but then we start running it and it machines a mirrored part

You say mirrored, but I think what your really saying is the helical cuts are inversed. I tried messing with the MMD and Post to get that changed and nothing worked. I would then mirror your part along the X axis and drive the toolpaths that way. Cheat the model to get you what you need. Not ideal, but sometimes that is what you need to do to get a job done in the real world so it will be a good teaching exercise on how to think out of the box to solve the problem.

Here is the file with what I was referring too. Hopefully this helps get you and the students going in the direction you all need to get what your after done.
