Depth cuts/Multi passes

Recommended Posts

This should be an easy one. This is what I am trying to accomplish. I want to do a simple contour tool path .300 deep with one rough pass leaving .01 in Z and .01 in XY and then one finish pass leaving 0 in Z and 0 in XY. for a total of two passes. When I use depth cuts with

max rough step =.5

#of finish passes =1

finish step =.01

combined with multi passes

roughing passes/number=1/spacing=.1

finish passes/number=1/spacing=.01

finish pass only at final depth

mastercam wants to make three total passes

The only way I can accomplish what I want is to disable multi passes and depth cuts, do one contour leaving .01 in z and .01 in xy then copy and paste that toolpath leaving 0 in z and 0 in xy. It seems to me this should be able to be accomplished with one toolpath. I hope this makes sense.

I do have a question for ya...

if you had it all contained in 1 operation..what happens if you wanted to do a tool change to do your finishing op?

I am just curious how you would have it leave .01 in the xyz then toolchange and clean up the remaining with a fresh tool all in the same op? headscratch.gif

Dave

That gives two passes but if you watch the numbers when it backplots it doesn't leave any material in xy for the finish pass to clean up.

If you wanted to finish with a different tool you would need two operations. The first leaving .01 in z and .01 in xy with tool number 1. Then you can copy and paste that operation and leave 0 in z and 0 in xy but make sure you select a new tool in your pasted operation. Maybe I am still missing something.

Bump for 2022 / Mcam 2023

I'm trying to do the same thing as the original post and can't seem to do it without two operations.

It seems like such a trivial thing to accomplish with one operation, but it doesn't seem to work no matter how I configure the parameters.

This CAN be done but of course everyone looking for the "Easy Button" won't like it....

Draw the lines at the desired XY positions and at the Z depth of the depth of cut....add one more set of lines at the XY finish cut positions and at the desired Z depth location...

Chain them all with a TOS and and Depth of Incremental 0.000"

You will get your depth of depth of cuts and your finish cut in the same path....

for me, I just add the 2nd operation...I mean is it really that big a deal?

Just thinking out loud here too,.....you could also create the path as you do with the 2 finish passes and use the Toolpath Editor to remove one of the passes....

Again, just another way to "old school" tool path and get exactly what you want

Favorite answer so far.

Just adding the second op is what I usually end up doing.

It just seems like such a simple motion to create in one toolpath that is stuns me that there isn't an "easy button" to accomplish it.

There are people who use the software and there are people who fight the software..

I Just do what it takes to get the job done...guys I teach don't whine, they learn how to get it done.

They trying to usually solve bigger problems.

Frankly, their time is better spent there than the minutia.

People were looking for a solution, I provided two...and of course for some, solving it and moving on is ok, for others....

Pffft.... Blow the "easy button"

Why cant the software just read my mind remotely with out me having to get out of bed. Just seems like too many steps are needed to get anything done.

For the fewer and fewer people that had to turn handles that are still left out there, doing two Z passes and letting the tool deflection give you the XY finish cut is a no brainer. For that matter, back then on a single straight cut  you could climb cut then back up and conventional to create a rough finish without moving the other axis.

What I do in the software is no stepover and do a z finish pass and use the deflection, less, but still some, to create both ruff and finish. The Deflection would cause the tool to heel over a bit and not be totally flat on the bottom so depth is a better way to finish both.

Doesn't leave as much stock for a finish cut? Push it harder on the rough LOL I agree on the just get it done as simply as possible
