o/t usb to serial

I bought two different usb to serial adaters, no luck with either one to communiate with my machines from my laptop. I did a search on this forum and it seems to be a problem. Jimmy Wakeford. said to shut off FiFo in windows xp, but I don,t know what that is. any help would be apprieciated.

That's the FIFO Buffers.

Go to my computer,properties, hardware, right click on the port that you are using, properties, advanced, and you will see the fifo buffer option,

Disable it.

once you got me there it looked familar I already shut that off and tried it earlier this week. I just didn,t look at the name of it.

Are you getting anything during transfer?

even if you get garbled crap that means you're close to getting it right.

You'd probably be better off buying a serial port card ($10-$30). I had no luck with the USB to serial adapters.

Which have you tried? We are using laptops at 4 seperate machines each connected to a Quatech 4 port usb to serial adapter, working great for almost 2 years now.

My adapter works great as long as the software is new enough to allow com ports above com 2. I connect to serial port controls all the time with it. I don't remember the brand but I got it at Frye's electronics. Model #GUC232A but I have had it for a couple of years now.

thanks for the replies. I am using a belkin model f5u409. on mt laptop it say this device is working correctly, but when I hook it to the machines it says cannot communicate.I also bought another model same result. I will keep trying.

I have had good luck using the usb - serial hubs from www.comtrol.com

 

I have not found a single port solution that was reliable.

I and the rest at my office use these,( http://www.shopfloorautomations.com/serial_laptop.php ) I have found that the USB to Seial is a hit and miss the best ones are the ones from radio shack.

Be careful. I have had one seem to be working, but it dropped large chunks of code in the tranfer with no warning or error at all.

Once you plug it in to pc you need to set the parameters on the com port it grabs to match your machine....baud, parity etc..
