Like to have pros and cons if possible on using the following with MCX2. Solid Works, Solid Edge and Inventor. Im getting solid Works just need to show due diligence and justification for a upcoming meeting with goverment beancounter (cost is not a factor). All ny CAD experience is with M/C Design, Draft and Cad Key. Also local tech school has classes fo Solid Works. Thanks in Advance

Solidworks by far. We have Solidworks, UG, Mastercam, ProE, Catia, Inventor, Icem (remember that) here in house. Solidworks and ProE are the most used. Single parts and small assemblies Solidworks shines above all. ProE takes the lead when dealing with large assemblies like say a jet engine.

quote:

with Mastercam Direct you can get Solidworks parts into Mastercam with their solids history intact.

Only with simple straight forward parts, certain types of features WILL get lost.

We are in the process of changing over from Autodesk Inventor to Solidworks in our Engineering department here. The guys don't have enough time on Solidworks yet to have found all of the bugs, but, so far our guys seem to like the Solidworks package a lot more than Inventor. Detailing has been a real workout in Inventor, even for the guy who is by far the best CAD jock we have; Solidworks is supposed to be better.

We looked at SolidEdge because a sister company runs UG but it really seened to be a more difficult package to run.

Solidworks. Easy and powerful up to medium sized assemblies. I'll bet in 4 hours you can off and running. Opens up all kinds of files, nice plugins etc. Very happening.

I tried Alibre once but it was a little coarse, say like a 49' F100 with no shocks, in granny gear, on the pony express trail. Also one of their salesmen just would not leave me alone. Really tried to nag me into a sale. Calling and emailing daily. I chucked the demo into the trash. You might fare better and it's really cheap.

Solidworks is much better in the design side than is inventor in my opinion and we have had some serious issues getting files we could use from Inventor into Mastercam. Alot of parts come in with holes in them, or missing features. We have in the past sent inventor files to Mathdata.com to have them fixed so they could be opened into Solidworks and/or Mastercam.

I used Inventor for a number of years and really liked it. A lot of people like the ease of taking AutoCAD files and bringing them into Inventor and creating 3D models from 2D line drawings. I have had some issues bringing in Inventor files into MC but I guess Inventor 11 has been certified for MCX. That will probably help. But it seems like SW and MC are sold to go with one another and would be the obvious choice.
