This way should work in most machines that can go back into a tapped hole without cross-threading or opening up the pitch diameter.

Yes there is. Look in the "Rigid Tapping" parameter section in your yellow FANUC manual. There's also a parameter so set full retract as opposed to the default High Speed retract.

In the example you posted, does the the tap retract to R each peck?  Does it reverse two revs?  etc?

Is this parameter controlled?

Travis good to see you and Happy New Year, comes down to how the control handles it. Some will go back to the R plane and others will go back to parameter value. What is the control?

Happy New Year to you Ron.  Hope you and your family is well.

Control is a Fanuc 31ib5.  I think i found it in the parameter manual.

One parameter to turn it on, another parameter to set a return value.

Yes and if you want to be real trick you can use the update parameter process in your code output to change the behavior on the fly if both parameters are on the fly adjustable without a control reset to change them. I did this on a Nakamura a couple years ago to override the percentage loop parameter to allow for broaching, but wanted it back on for normal operations. The guys in Japan gave me a slick way to turn it off for the broaching and then turn it back on after the broaching was done.
