Importing .dwg files

Recommended Posts

Just starting messing around with MC. I have been to a few classes and I have done quite a lot of tutorials. I know how to create geometry, apply toolpaths and generate g-code. I have written one program and ran it on the machine and it worked. But, I cannot figure out how in the hell to import an Autocad (.dwg) file into Mastercam. We have all of our .dwg files on the servers "L" drive. Anybody help?

Thanks

In the file open utility you change the file type you would like to open in Mcam,..ACad file type are under IGES in the menu.

And be sure that the scale of the DWG file is 1:1

OK, I went to "Open" file, I had .dwg under "File Type". My file was there, when I clicked the Green Check.....nothing happened. I switched the "File Type" to IGES, file went away and folder was empty. ????????????? I am getting nowhere here.

Where do you check the scale, in the .dwg file? Also, once it is imported, won't "fit screen" bring it in view?

Could be in a different view, could be the same color as your background, could be hidden, could be blanked, could be something else...:D

Go to screen, statistics. That will tell you if there is anything there.

Also, open up the level manager, that should tell you if there are any entities on the visible levels.

As far as checking the scale of things, just analyze an entity you know to be a certain size and see if Mcam says if it's the right size.

If you set the file open to one specific file type, then that's all that will be displayed up in the file open. If you scroll to the bottom of the file type menu and select all files, you will see all the files in that are in that folder. If the file was saved as a DWG you will not be able to open it as an IGES.

What version of Mcam are you using? McamX5 is configured to open AutoCad 2011 files and earlier.

I specifically made a folder with only one file in it to make things less confusing, it is an .dwg file. Mastercan will not open a .dwg?

I have MC X5.

I went to "Sreen-Statistics" after I thought I opened a file. Dialog box said "Current Mastercam File has NO entities".

I opened up Level Manager, it said I had a boatload of entities on 12 levels, I checked the box to make them all visible. No dice.....It is almost time to go home.

Thanks anyway. I have a Mastercam class tomorrow, maybe my instructor can walk me through it.

Hey Danny's Dad,

Try using the "regenerate display list", it's in the Screen Dropdown 5th icon from the bottom, or ctrl+R. For some reason the ACad 2011 files will come in but not be displayed, regen display should fix it.

Thanks for all of your help. I was importing correctly, unfortunately the file was a mix of Autocad and Inventor so Mastercam could not show the file. I had to go into the file and re-save it as a .dwg, then Mastercam could open it and be visible.
