Engraving

My first time trying to use the engraving op and I am failing. I can only get the path to engrave the perimeter. The font used is wider in areas and I would like the engraving tool to cut the center then perimeter. What am I doing wrong?

What are you trying to engrave?

Using whatever you prefer as an engraving tool:

 

ToolPath

 

Contour > Window Chain the letters

 

Turn tool comp to OFF

 

Set linking parameters and your done.

 

This is if your engraving on a flat surface

I would like the whole letter engraved, not just the perimeter. I would also like the engraving toolpath to lift up in the corners sharpening the corners.

Use a chamfer mill/engraving tool/taper mill, edit the point of it (this will give you the sharp pull outs at corners). Make it say .015 and have a depth of -.035, select rough options and a step over of 60% (.01). Cut geometry (on top).

What version of the software are you trying to use?

 

In X5 look for the Roughing/Finishing Tab, enable Rough and if you wish change your stepover %.

 

By enabling roughing this will remove the material in the letters and finishing will have the tool lift up in the corners.

I am using X5 and did check the roughing check box but it only cuts the perimeter.

First time using FTP site, I hope I did it right. File is ENGRAVING TEST.MCX-5 in mastercam_forum/X5_files folder

Change the rough pattern from zigzag to either parallel spiral or clean corners.

I don't know why.

Be sure to check "First rough then finish" if you want to cut the center then the perimeter.

The issue seemed to be that the Roughing method of Zigzag didn't work for this file. If you change the roughing method to Parallel Spiral or Clean Corners then it roughs the part as shown in the graphic below.
