Best Method for face machining

I'm wondering your inputs on the best method of machining a recess on an endface of a part im trying to turn on the lathe. I've been told a i need a specific face grooving tool matching the largest diameter i will be starting at.

Not necessarily, most face grooveing tools will create their own clearance. The initial penetration must be within the range of the tool, but normally there is no limitation after the initial plunge.

Hum guess I am not see the issue here. I would think a boring bar could do what you have there. Take a finish path and just step it in and should be good from there. I will do a face groove tool if I need to, but from what I see it look more like a face counter bore than a groove unless I am just missing something.

Or a 55° OD turn horizontally mounted work well so you can cut the entire front geometry with it

you can also get a tool like this if you cant mount a 55deg like mr m said, this pic is from a seco catalog, i think a face grooving tool would be the wrong tool for what you need to do

Does anyone have a sample file or advice on using the Iscar face grooving tool MIFHR. I was told there is a certain grooving action you can use to do an intial plunge, then turn x+ and x- from that point.

I think the better question is I got this file I want to use this tool with does anyone mind helping me use this tool on that part? There is so many different ways a groove can be done for me it would be best if I had an idea what you were trying to accomplish to see how I can help you accomplish what you are after.

Ditto..... This is how I would do it, maybe a 35° with a .032r
