Creating a vector normal to surface

As the title says, I'm having some issues trying to get a vector line for a point on a surface that is quite complex. I have the point already located, but having trouble figuring out how to get a line vector that is perpindicular to the surface normal.

Have you tried creating an offset surface and projecting the point you have onto the newly created offset surface with the setting to "normal"?

Would the new point be in the same spot where I could draw a line between the two points and that line would be perpendicular to the original surface?

In the project dialog, select the "points/lines" box and see if that gets you what you want.

select your point

 

xform -> project ->points lines box

 

This will open a Project Points dialog.

have you tried pierce points in X7 Verisurf? I can't get it to work properly and I received no reply to a bug report I sent in

Hum shoot me an email with the problem you are seeing Gcode and I will be glad to see if I can help get it looked at.

Go to Create / Point / Dynamic then after you select your point on the surface that you want you can select the line function and give it a length and there you go.

Note: you have to be in 3D mode for this to work right.

Oddly enough, I was just using it yesterday and it worked fine...and ran across this post. I did have to unshade the surface in order to pick the point tho.

Yep. Just walked out and helped our inspector do exactly this with the surface I made this post about. Worked perfectly.

It works fine in X5, but not X6 or X7

gcode, I was using it a little different than your sample. I was getting a line of an existing point, not a point off a line. you are correct tho, the results are way different. I even tried making a line off the points you created, and that result is different.....hopefully Ron will track something down.
