VERISURF TOOLS For MASTERCAM 2024

Recommended Posts

  • 3 weeks later...

.... and Ernie & his clique install like a bunch of examples  for  Power Surf and the  Reverse  Engineering portion  of the software  in  my mcam2019 \ Parts \.   My favorite part is  a part that looks like it's been hit with a  shell of  depleted  uranium,  half of it missing and  Power Surf just beautifully  reconstructs it just by chaining  the wireframe on the edge of the hole :) .

My question is , is the file "NET SURFACE "  thrown in by you , or was it there before you came along ?  Is there  functionality within  Verisurf that would  overcome the  structured chaining you need  in NET Surf? I tried throwing Power Surf at it and just window chained one example but to no avail...

Also ,  I  had a file  that I  could not open  using Mastercam's  Open file .  It would crash  , but with  "Merge CAD file " the  file arose from  the "digital ashes ".  So I guess this is my way  of praising  .....

Next week  I'll start going thru the Reverse stuff.

My question is could I get a decent  result  with  the file  I have enclosed here using  Verisurf. It's been derived using a simple meander digitizing cycle on the Heidenhain  control.5ab73a41901d7_mechanicaldiditizing.thumb.png.7acfa1db6ae35c392a1269fd2b30a88b.png

The radius of the stylus is 1.9 mm . Until now I've handled these cases  using the wreframe as a basis for surface modeling.  I could  digitize the whole thing also in  a 90 deg

direction  to catch the shapes parallel to the meander direction better.

NET SURFACE is an old file that was used to teach the Mastercam Net Surface feature.   I included it to help teach RE, it's one of the best tools in the toolbox for surfacing, that file is not good for the Power Surface tool. Power Surface drapes a blanket surface over the chained geometry and works great for capping n-sided shapes that the other surfacing tools are not meant for.

Power Surface may work on your sample scanned file, try it! if not, there are other RE tools to that could help.

That type of scan is not good for Power Surface.  The better tool for this job is Auto Surface, if you had more points on the ends by adding the 90 deg scans it would have turned out better.

Here is the results from Auto Surface, this is a Verisurf RE tool, I created a Mesh from the scan lines and offset the mesh 1.9 and cropped the top off than ran Auto Surface to get these surfaces. This is the quickest method.  The best method would be to create a curve network to create fewer surfaces, but this takes more time and you would want more data on the ends to do a good job.

What do you think?

My Pointer on Power Surface, this tool can do a lot of powerful things that the other surface tools could not do. Here are the very basics, think of a flexible rectangular sheet of material that can be draped or pulled over points to create a NURBS surface patch or a trimmed NURBS surface using the trim options.

The curve points act like magnets with magnetic power set by the Curve Weight setting. (1)

The Curve Weight can have a lot on influence on shape, if you set it to zero, you will see the flat sheet before any weight is applied. 1.0 is the max weight power, smaller values pull less and lets the sheet blend into a smoother surface shape and controls how close the surface sheet is pulled to the points.

To see what points are used for developing the surface, turn on Point Display in the Draw Settings. (2)

To use more points on the chained curves, change the Chain Settings at the bottom. (3)

Thank You Ernie . Exactly what I was looking for .  I of course used Swept for that case. In fact that was my first  go to , but then I thought , "hey I'll throw this new one at this" .

as you can see , one day of use and already I have a feeling for what to do , to at least get a sucker to think what is here below in the pic is the right solution.  I agree PS (Power Surf) is literally a "stretch" here , but if you look at my surface from a mile away , it looks fine :) .

If I may suggest something, there's so much to tweak , that you might end up in a situation where it would be easier to start with the default values .  So how about a button

"Reset to default values" ?

Did you notice this ?

HI Ernie .

Everything seems to work fine , but if I look at the event log I get a load  of these errors .....

1.  Are they occurring  as a result of errors in the Mastercam.Workspace file  ?

2. How can I clean it up ?

3 Should I clean it up ?
