Cutting D2 material

Recommended Posts

I have a detail made of D2 material that is 1 inch thick that has a tooth profile down one edge. My question is what would be more accurate to get it water jetted or laser jetted or is edm the only way to hold size and finish? I am looking to hold .005 tolerances and preferably no taper to the side where its getting cut. Thanks is advance.

Laser will also give you a "heat affected zone" that will penetrate some distance into the material. EDM is the only solution I would consider for a 1" thick piece of D-2 with a .005 profile tolerance. Since you've got so much tolerance, find a place that knows how to push their machine. As Del mentioned, .0005 for Rouging means you could get away with a single pass, depending on the finish requirements.
