That's awesome. I've been working on getting people to look at things this way at the new shop and only when I produce results do they say....hmm.....maybe we should have done this sooner.

 

Way to go, I never really mind when I miss that fast of a show. I know it'll happen sooner than later at that production rate.

That's interesting, it looks like this tap takes more torque then the same size coolant though form tap we use from OSG in 4340HT RC35-38, I don't think we run out sfm that high though.

We've ordered a 5/16 - 18 roll tap for this part

At such a small diameter it's going to be hard to tell. That is why I was using the 5/8nc one we use as an example.

 

I think with high quality coolant through form taps you can get the torque lower then a cutting tap in a lot of materials, but, in hardened materials you can't get over 70% thread. I think the 4340ht part we form tap 5/8NC in is only like 68% or something. But it's fast.

 

I recently did a job in the softest 304 I have ever encountered (we machine 2000-10,000lbs/month) tapping 1/4npt, absolutely could not get anyone's taps to work, had to switch to threadmills, which worked great but were probably 10 times slower.
