Tool defaults on Mill

Morning guys. I was wondering if there was a way to set up tool defaults for my linking parameters.

Example for arguments sake and an easy example, lets say I have a spotdrill. This tool will always drill with a retract value of .25 and a depth of -.125 and a clearance height of 1"

So I know I can set up my defaults to have those linking parameters set, but if I wanted say my 1/4 drillbit to have an r value of .1 and a clearance height of 3". Can I set these 2 tools individually somehow?

That's where an ops library shines over simply setting the operation defaults. When setting the operations defaults, you can only save one setting per toolpath type where with an ops library, you can save as many as you want. Each tool will have it's own operation saved with the desired settings.

I read that whole thread too. Lots-o-good shiznit in there.

I guess I'm missing something tho, how does one go about creating the ops library in the first place? Maybe I'm over thinking it and will see it next time I'm at my workstation. I know how to and do export/import ops all the time but how did you make the library of ops?

A library file (.OPERATIONS-9, or whatever version) is just a MC file with that extension. There are so many different ways to do it, I'm not sure what to tell you. You could start one from scratch, you could copy an existing one and rename it, then edit it to your liking, etc.

I guess one way to get started (from scratch), you could open a session of MC, create spot, drill, and tap operations for 1/4-20 tap and save the file. Close MC, and go into Windows Explorer and rename it to "jlw.OPERATIONS-9." Move that file into the shared MC directory under Mill->Operations and make it your default operations library in your config. Then you could use either of the 2 methods that I mentioned in the linked topic (to answer Rickster's question on the second page) to add more operations to your library. Keep adding stuff as you go and before you know it, you'll have a complete library of most of the repeat stuff that you program. You'll notice from the screen shots in that other topic that I have my libary organized with operation groups. Organize it how it makes sense to you.

Personally, I was handed a library when I started at the first shop that I used MC (thank you Jon Hanson, if you're out there!) and I've been taking it with me and updating it as I go over the past 13 years.

Make sense?
