Best CNC router for MDF doors, edging panels?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

We are looking at purchasing a router for the purpose of machining MDF doors; the components are made up of 1/2" and 1/4" MDF.  The same machine would be utilized for routing veneer edging panels.   The sheet size would be up to  5'x10'. Any recommendations on brand, configuration, etc. would be appreciated.

We are also trying to decide between purchasing new and used, and are not fixed on any manufacturer - the key thing for us is long term reliability of the machine, and prompt service.

Some brands we have looked at are:

  • Biesse
  • Homag/Weeke
  • Felder
  • Komo
  • Thermwood

Any notes on experiences with service, programming, and reliability on these or any other machines would be very much appreciated.  Thank you!

we have 5 thermwood 5 x 10 routers ages running from 2000 to 2015. 2 were bought new and three were found on the internet. thermwood still gives us free phone support for the ones we found and bought on the internet. the longest time we waited for a part was approx 3 weeks because it was not on their shelf. all other parts were overnight or  regular ups. the voice phone support is fantastic. their controllers are not propriorty and parts can easily be bought local or from them. thermwood supports mastercam and they are also able to help with the programming if needed. by the way, we cut two .75 sheets of plywood at a time, program speed is 500 ipm and we fly, lol. if you are close to north carolina, you are more than welcome to visit us. location asheboro, nc

We have been running a SHODA Maxx for several years, and it has proven to be an extremely reliable work horse.  We also run SCM Routech routers with pod & rail setups which are like Ferrari's.  They run like a thoroughbred, but spend a lot of time in shop.  And they aren't cheap to fix.  I have heard that the German brands (i.e. Homag/Weeke) are very reliable machines.

I second the Haas thought but have little to no experience with others. We have a DMI (aka DMS) but reliability is in question as well as the history of this machine. it has had a rough life so ??

don't know you location or budget but support is a huge consideration

The BIESSSE is Italian made. The owner has one in our other building.

It does not interface with Mastercam very well. It has its own macros and language. It also has its own software.

I just saw a new gearbox for it the other day. Don't know what happened there.

The tooling for it is awesome. The mini chansaw attachment is cool for routing cavities in the sides of doors.

Price isn't real bad. It does run like a raped ape.
