Surface Lofting

Hello, Im having an issue using surface lofting. I'm lofting from a circle to a square to another circle above. the issue is that when I'm selecting my chains it selects the chain on the square only at the corners. I need the chain to start at the midpoint of the square for the loft to make the desired shape. It also seems that I cannot use my auto cursor to select the midpoint. Thanks.
