surface from solid

I'm having the most difficult time creating a surface from a solid. All I want to do is create a surface from only a few faces on the model. Every time I try to select individual faces it selects the entire model. I can't for the life of me tell when I have "only faces" selected as the selection method. It doesn't highlight enough to tell. It looks like only "face selection" is highlighted but it still tries to select the entire model. Please help this is so frustrating. I've had problems with this ever since version 2017.

I figured it out. If all else fails, read the help. lol. I never noticed there was an icon next to my curser that changed depending on if it was selecting faces or the entire model. What's the purpose of having the solids selection method at the top of the screen? Just sayin
