Thoughts on the appropriate approach to this?

Hey all,

 

I have a weird challenge that I am not sure how to execute tool paths for. In terms of the boss there, I was going to try to get it cut to that spec with the fillet. I have a 5x machine...and the fillet is .125".

Any plans of attack i could borrow to try this out?

5 axis morph will get you the nicest finish and blend as shown in a pic. You can also do it "old school" with either flowline or one of the high speed surfacing toolpaths (waterline).

Looks like you have easy access to this feature, so I'd lean towards getting it done from both sides (2 toolpaths at 180 deg from each other) along x+ and x- as shown in your screen shot....simple waterline

You could also Swarf the Boss Wall, and use an "untrimmed" surface of the intersecting Cylinder, as the "Compensation Surface". With multi-passes, it would be easy to contour the boss, with a couple rough and finish passes.

Otherwise, Mark's suggestion of Morph between 2 Curves is the way I'd do it.

If the fillet is a common tool size then 3D contour will cut this nicely.

That is a nice Mill/Turn example. Sorry, but I am going to copy that and make up a sample file for testing.

Thanks for the tips guys. Did some optiroughing and now onto the 5 axis portion.  The morph between 2 curves makes way more sense compared to what i was doing

The side boss is female threaded 1/8 npt

The pocket boss is male 7/16-28 threaded

The other boss is female 7/16-28 threaded....if that is relevant
