Best Material For Outdoor Sign?

Hello all,

I am new to this forum but I hope I am posting this in the correct section. I was just wondering if anyone had a good material suggestion for an outdoor hanging sign. The sign will be in Upstate Ny and will be exposed to all the elements that goes with that.  I made a sign out of sign foam and it came out pretty good on cnc router that they have at school but the sign foam does not seem strong enough in the protruding letters (They are about .25" thick or less in some areas). I have attached my basic file if anyone would like to see it.

Hey Shooter!  I work for a wood window and door manufacturer in Niagara.

The best material for outdoor use by far is Accoya.  But it can be expensive and hard to get.  It is an acetylized soft wood that does not rot, and moves minimally.  Absolutley hands down the best.  The same company makes an exterior grade MDF product that is waterproof called Tricoya.  It claims to be as good as the Accoya.

Easier woods to get that would resilient to the outdoors are:

Teak, Mahogany, Sapele, White Oak.

Teak and Mahogany would be fine with just an oil finish.  Or a polyurethane if desired (be sure to wipe teak and mahogany down with denatured alcohol or mineral spirits first to remove the surface oil and allow a top coat to bond, this goes as well for any glue up).

Also if possible use Rift Cut or Quarter Cut material.  It moves differently than flat or plain cut material.

Corian is great stuff!!

thanks for the accoya suggestion - I didn't know about that and it looks really solid.  We use a lot of mahogany & Sapele - I'm amazed at how well they do outside with little effort.

I just made a sign out of Walnut for... some reason - I saw a great walnut sign that seemed to have withstood the San Diego sun, but time will tell on mine
