drawing a solid carbide boring bar

in Mastercam tools essentially require 2 colors to be defined.....the holder & the insert...

With a solid carbide bar there is no insert...What I will do is I will take the end of the tool and create "it" as the insert color....this allows me to have solid carbide bars be them small boring bars, internal groove/thread bars.

Search the Mastercam help file for a breakdown of colors you should use to define holder, insert up, insert down colors

In 2019 you can do them as 3D tools but the premise, if you look at the tip, is the same..

I hope im not stepping on any toes(JParis), but if youre just beginning I just started maybe 6 months ago. The beginner way ive found is to draw the 2D geometry of the tool in the positive quadrant. I sit there with the tool and a vernier, and draw it as I go. You only need to draw half the tool, and mastercam will spin it. Then click on import from level in the custom tool menu, then mastercam should show you the tool you drew. You can change the parameters of the tool and save it to your library. Anyone chime in if im doing it wrong.

Hi Grimes, i think you might be referring to a milling tool, lathe custom tools are created in a similar process but when you said is will spin the tool it leads me to think your referring to milling where i think they are talking about a lathe boring bar.

On a side note, i dont think Jparis is a beginner to the software if you look at some of his 17,000+ posts lol.
