Anyone using anything like this?

Is it affordable? Just saw it in the new desktop engineering magazine and thought it'd be cool to have.

Reverse engineering is THEEEE most time consuming part of what I do, an if I could afford somethinglike this, I'd get it.

 

Also, does it WORK with MC??

I've lusted after these little guys too...I'm tired of using a DRO and a bunch of indicators for my poor-man's CMM.

Seems to me that folks generate a point cloud in Rhino, lays some surfaces on it, and THEN bring it into MC.

What kind of data do these things spit out? Sounds like just points??

Plug. Jimmy over at Barefoot CNC is a dealer of these things. I think he is doing some kind of show or something this week or he would be on this subject like a tick on a dog. You could visit his site for more infro.

They work very well with Mastercam. They will create any type of geometry that needs a position input, lines, splines... I usually create just points and do with them what I want. You can also setup scan planes and run the scribe along a surface and when the scribe intersects the scan plane it creates a point which you can then loft a surface. These are not FARO arms, there accuracy is limited to maybe .002". I think it talks about it's accuracy on the website. They don't have the accuracy which means they don't have the price tag. Very affordable. We have several customers using them with great success.
