I want to setup a home office to program using remote desktop.

I have one seat of MC at work using a dongle.

Shop PC:

Intel Xeon E5-2360

64g ram

quadro K1200 (2x)

solid state HD

dual monitors

Internet speed at the shop is:

30 mbps down

10 mbps up

Internet speed at home is:

100 mbps down

I don't do any crazy multi axis surfacing or anything like that.  99% is 2.5 axis but work extensively with solids.

Questions:

This should be doable, right?

How powerful of a PC do I need on the home side of things?

If I have dual monitors at  home will my workspace behave just as it does at the shop?  Or should I have one extra large home monitor?

What is the best remote desktop software to use?

Thanks for the help!

Your home computer doesn't need to be anything special. My wife works on her work computer at home using a laptop she runs dual monitors at work and we have a dual monitor setup at home as well. I'm fairly certain they are using Go to My PC.

VPN....

By using a VPN, you are only drawing a license across the 'net....all work is on your system at home that is running MCAM....

I have not tried but I have heard using any software to log in and program on your work computer from home is painful at best

remote desktop can work but its painful and tough to be productive

The best solution is a Mastercam worthy PC at home accessing a Mastercam nethasp  via a VPN

I've heard  that you can also do it with a USB Hasp and a USB Anywhere network device

but have never actually seen it done.

dealer says they can convert to net hasp for $$$ but it's not designed for vpn and offer no support for it....but that sounds like it may be the best option anyways.  It also means I'll have to invest in a beefy computer for the house.  How complicated is it to setup for someone (like myself) with zero networking experience?  I may play with the remote desktop first just to see how it works...doesn't hurt to try I guess.

You'd be better of with a standalone hasp key, make certain you don't forget it at home when you go in to to work.

You have to edit the nethasp.ini files. There were instructions on the internet. Just a couple minor things to change. Server address and port.

I had gotten ours to work with no experience. In 1 minute you will realize why remote does not work. It will take you that long just to rotate a part 180 degrees.

I don't know what is involved on the nethasp end, but the setup from home is simple.

A minor edit to the nethasp.ini and switching your home installation from hasp to nethasp (network)

It takes about 5 minutes.

If you have solid broadband you should be able to work with no noticeable difference between home and work

Breaking a hasp out to a nethasp is not cheap though.

When you bought the hasp you got a discount because it only supports one machine and one programmer at a time.

You give that discount back when you break your hasp into a nethasp.

when I used to carry a hasp between home and work, I kept it attached to my car keys ....  can't leave home without it.
