Low cost tool length probe

I bought one of these with the last retrofit kit I bought:

I cannot attest to the function yet as I haven't completed the retrofit but it "feels" extremely good in the hand, looks good and the plunger is smoother than any of the Mazaks at my day job.

There are these as well:

If you are feeling froggy I have made replacement tool setters for a few machines using Omron precision switches.

The next one I engineer will use an American made switch from EZAutomation:

https://store.ezautomation.net/Proximity-Sensors-s/150.htm

or a high precision switch from automationdirect:

https://www.automationdirect.com/adc/Search/Search?fctype=adc.falcon.search.SearchFormCtrl&cmd=Search&searchquery=switch&categoryId=1511415&TxnNumber=-1&searchqty=10&start=0

I haven't been to automationdirect in some time, looks like they even have touch setters:

https://www.automationdirect.com/adc/Search/Search?fctype=adc.falcon.search.SearchFormCtrl&cmd=Search&searchquery=switch&categoryId=1511418&TxnNumber=-1&searchqty=10&start=0

but they look like a lathe tool eye... which is why I built the first one I ever built.  To replace a lathe touch setter that kept getting jogged through.
