Lathe Compensation for tools

Touch off point on the machine is really the driving part of why. If you think about how you touch off a milling tool then it makes no sense. You don't normally care about the side of an end mill just the bottom. With lathe tools you normally touch off the leading edge that will establish faces. Then you touch off the bottom edge for ID, OD and other things. Neutral holding tools will use what you have shown or button tools where you are programming center line and not setting the tool from the edge. Very dangerous process and really need to know and understand the why's and why not's before you make a possible mess of things.

Lathe is very easy, don't make it complicated by messing with those.  Only thing I try to make sure is that the radius of the tool in MC matches the radius of the tool on the machine.

so then do you use center of radius compensation at the machine, or do you simply use the edge on X and Z? thank you

No compensation.  When I said that "I make sure that the radius on  MC matches the radius of the tool on the machine" I meant the radius of the physical tool, not the radius call out on the control.  I don't use compensation on the program.  On the lathe all you need to do is change the "WEAR" on X to change the diameter it cuts at, or the "WEAR" on Z to change the depth/length.

I understand that first part...been modelling and saving my tools for future use...finding certain radii on my old tools can be a pain tho. Having the exact physical tool correctly shown in mastercam lathe seems to be much more critical than mill. Like i said, I started as a mill guy so I am hopping onto the lathe bandwagon late.  Have made some good parts but I am by no means a "lathe guy" yet.

Thank you for the help!
