Here is my take on your problem. Sorry I couldn't get a Single Solid, but hope 3 solids get you close enough to what your after. I also machined the part with a 1" ball endmill to support why I made the solids the way I did.

  Rich, I could get it to work in surface mode. I had to machine the inside of it. On the surfaces I created it had overlapping surfaces. Not clean. Rotate yours and look down inside. Doesn't seem like it should be that difficult a shape to model. I was going to try it in SW.  Never to late! Thanks

Strangely enough my Sweep surfaces look clean inside - I've trimmed them back to a flat surface in the attached file (the flat surface wouldn't trim so I've deleted it)

"Rotate" is always the default option on the Sweep surface - which by the way only uses one Along contour even if you had selected more than one, that goes for Translate too. Glad I was able to help after all :)
