I know it is asked often. But going to send one out for quote, and making sure I am not missing something.

Sticking with intel, havent heard enough to know if ryzen is stable for mastercam?

CPU - I9-9900 ks @ 4gig

Memory - probably ddr4 4400? 64 gigs? I see a lot of people say get more and more memeory. But I did pull up a file today that is one of my larger files we do at 200 megs. And I was never over 6 gig of used memory.  Was curious does anyone ever see memory usages needing more than 64 gigs?

Drive - m2. ssd 500 gigs

Motherboard - Asus boards I have had in the past have always been pretty rock solid., Any suggestions?

Video Card - Currently run a quadro p4000. Looking at the charts anyone using these quadro rtx400 cards?  The benchmarks shows it right near a quardo p6000 for just a little more than a p4000.

thoughts and suggestions always appreciated.

While I know that it can be cheaper to build your own system, I much prefer to just buy what I need from the Dell Factory Outlet. I don't need the absolute 'latest and greatest', and I find that I can get the cost down to "almost the cost of the components alone", by just buying a 'refurbished' system from the Outlet.

What is your budget for this computer build? I did a quick search on the Factory Outlet, and came up with some amazing systems, at reasonable prices:

Example 1:

Good timing on the thread. I'm looking at a new HP ZBook mobile workstation, and trying to decide between an i9 and Xeon processor.

Max of 64Gb ram.

Currently running an i7, with 64Gb of ram, so I'm guessing the i9 would be a better bet.

The other thing you get with a Dell Factory Outlet Computer, is the 3 year hardware support and warranty.

I have only ever had one component fail on a Dell. I had a hard drive that went bad, about a year into owning my first Precision Workstation. After remotely diagnosing the bad hard drive, the technician on the phone said "Yep, that result confirms the hard drive has failed. You will have one on your doorstep by 10:00 AM tomorrow". I was not happy to have to restore my files from my last backup (lost about a week of work, and learned to make backing up my data a priority!), but I was super happy with the support and service that I received from Dell.

The most interesting thing about the new AMD processors on the high end is the processor cache:

image.thumb.png.68bb7276a640cfc486b4587d7bcbf60e.png

I'm really wondering what this will do for toolpath calculation times and overall mastercam performance. The intel 9900k has only 16mb or cache total just to compare....

Any thoughts?

Budget is pretty open as long as it warrants the speed. I program for 10 machines. So if I can speed up stock models and all the processing that slows me down, it would be worth it. But I also hate spending a ton of money for a .5% in crease of sort, if it was a 5-10% increase than my opinion is to spend what is necessary.

With the comment on chip cache, has anyone been using a Ryzen with Mastercam?

And anyone with any experience with rtx400 vs p400 cards?

I'd be very curious to see how that AMD Ryzen Threadripper chip performs "in the real world".

My hunch is that Intel will eat the AMD's lunch, for Mastercam Performance.

While having "128 Mb" of Cache sounds huge, that is the L3 or "spillover" Cache. L1 and L2 Cache are the primary and secondary blocks of CPU memory.

The reality is that this particular AMD chip is optimized for programs that run many simultaneous multi-threaded applications. I don't believe that Mastercam makes use of Multi-Threading in the same way that other programs are designed to make use of the Multi-threading.

What do I mean by that?

Well, a Stock Model for example, might be setup to process as a "separate thread". But, I don't believe that the Stock Model Calculations themselves, are multi-threaded. In other words, the Stock Model is still calculated by a single process thread, once it is allowed to start calculating (could be dependent on other "input", like a previous toolpath). The 'Stock Model Thread' is not hyper-threaded, so it isn't like that Stock Model Calculation is being spread across your 24 Cores/48 Threads. Technically, you could generate up to 48 individual Toolpaths at at time, but you are still limited by several factors:

  • There is a 'databus' between the Hard Drive (SATA or SSD), and the Chip (processor), which is basically 50 times slower at data transfer, versus the clock cycle of the chip.
  • The main "throttle" in processing data is not the size/speed of the chip. It is the size/speed (flow rate) of the 'pipes' that handle the Data I/O between RAM, CPU, and Storage Memory.
  • AMD has historically had much more latency in data transfer between L1/L2/L3 Cache, versus Intel.

I got my HP workstation through the Medium Size Business dept. at HP (although I do own an LLC it wasn't necessary, at least when I ordered).

Got a good discount. Love the computer, will be going back next year for it's replacement.

How about cutting your calculation times by 40-70%, instead of 10-15%?

How would that be possible? By applying the correct technology.

Case in point:

While I'm not super stoked on the AMD Radeon Pro, I have a feeling that it would be more than adequate for Graphics Performance for Mastercam.

But the Intel Xeon 8260, at 3.9 Ghz, with a 35.75 MB Cache,

Too rich for your blood?

How about this one:

Last one. This is a spectacular machine. It is only a 35% discount. Not quite the 40% they usually give, but that is likely due to the quality of the components in this build.

256 GB of RAM (@ 2933 MHz DDR4, and it is even the ECC, not that 'non-ECC' cheap stuff...)

I think this one, is easily the best "bang for the Mastercam buck", of any of the systems I've posted about. 256 GB of RAM. Nvidia Quadro RTX5000, with 16GB of Video Memory, what?!?!

@IX Computers

This is a local Cali company (San Clemente)

They have very good prices and will build overclocked machines with Intel warranties.

I have been considering buying my next machine from them.

My current machine is a BOXX Apex2 which was expensive but has given  me several years of trouble free service.

Has anybody hear done business with these guys?

Their prices look to be 30-40% lower than BOXX for similar machines and maybe 20% higher than

buying the components and building it yourself

In my opinion that price is shockingly high for those components. They charge $1000 for a $350 processor? Also ram of that spec is around $300. or less. I wouldn't get a sound card. Also what in the world is that $949 adapter; why is that so expensive? I think I'm missing something or that is so incredibly expensive for those specs.

That is a Quadro RTX 4000 video card.. Nvidia's newest

They are $875 on Amazon .. a $75 markup is reasonable IMO

The processor is  high, but that charge includes  dual fan radiator/water cooling + warrantied overclocking

$999 is still pricey though

I mentioned to our President of operations that I was going to buy a gaming computer to replace my old one then start writing a post for our mill turns. He said we use a gaming computer for spectrometer calculations and he would buy that computer for me to work at home.

Here are the specs I got from R&D,

HP Z6 (2TB)

Cost:  $4345

CPU:  Intel Xeon Gold 5218 2.3GHz

RAM:  16GB (2666 MHz)

HDD:  2TB M.2 SSD

GPU:  Nvidia Quadro RTX 5000

Check out this card

I think it might be just a touch overkill for my needs :D

Very nice machine

I think I'd go one step down on the video card (RTX 4000) and spend the saving on RAM

I was told that card is doing a couple million calculations per second.

I am (was) (maybe still am) looking at a RTX 2080 ti for my card. I'm replacing my everyday computer for normal home stuff. Writing posts will be a lower percentage of my total time. I actually feel like I'm stealing money by getting that computer.
