So, short of SpaceClaim (which is awesome!), another way to do it manually is to choose Simplify Spline from the Wireframe menu:

That will give you duplicate arcs (one for each side), so window half of 'em and delete them:

Finally, use Wireframe > Close Arcs (two above Simplify Spline) and window select the remaining half-arcs:

Interesting. If they are splines, do you have an explanation for why different versions of MC bring them in as splines and others bring in arcs?

So it looks like the answer is that they don't come into MC as different types. They're splines.
