Helical Bore

Recommended Posts

I have a part with a 'trapped' 7.375" bore. Because it's trapped by two .125" walls I have a 2.7" X 1" diameter side mill coming in and helical boring to rough the material, a 4" X .5" slot mill cutting a 1" section of the bore to finish, and then a boring bar coming in with the spindle off and an M119 to avoid the part, and then turning the spindle on inside the part and finishing.

Mastercam is outputting the arcs for the rough helical bore off center by up to .01". For example, the center of my bore is X0 Y-6.5 and the arc center comes out to X-0.0083 Y-6.4856 Is there a way to correct that?

Also, the time it takes to finish this one operation is upwards of an hour since I'm cutting cast iron and the feeds are slow for the 2.7" (89RPM @ 2.1IPM). Any recommendations for cutting this cycle time down?
