  1. Notice I don't use the Transparency for the in the graphics area icons. That space was taken so it is not longer useable. I got tired of accidentally hitting things that were slightly hidden, but still part of the screen. The Quick Masks use to be part of a tool bar. The Selections tools use to be part a tool bar out of the useable screen. The Change features part of the levels and such were locked to the bottom of the screen. All these things changed and for me didn't make me faster they slowed me down. I adapted the software to get my speed back. 2020 has a lot of new things added that make it a good software. All the complaints and how much it is not good are not justified sorry to those that think they are. Are there things I don't like yes and as a paying Customer I have made those complaints well known just not so much publicly. However having been in the many different shops I have been in and helping write the book for a lot the manufacturing method and processes being used by many companies today Mastercam hold's it own just fine. I can open file in 2020 in 5 minutes that took 20 minutes in 2019 that X9 can't open. Chaining changed and took me a little to get it, but I got it. Other things have changed and I am adjusting to them. I am able to earn a living using Mastercam and go head to head with any CAM package on the planet and as long as I can keep doing that I will keep using Mastercam as my tool to do it.

  2. Some reference info- Air region extent is 4x tool diameter. I imagine overlapping region trimming is tough because we have knowledge of only the input chains, and then each region would have to be cross checked against every other region and some intelligence applied to the result. I'm sure this will see many improvements in the future- the ability to add multiple air regions was just introduced, and the functionality will continue to evolve release to release. For now, giving the path a little more knowledge of surrounding geometry is enough to get a good path.

  3. A pencil toolpath is your friend for this one. Carmen

  4. You should have other options to control your Tool Axis Control if using Swarf or Curve 5 axis with just chains and not surfaces. You have your edges then use them and see if that speeds things up and also gives you better control for the toolpaths. Hopefully your company will quit limiting its ability to be competitive and see they need to invest correctly to use the technology to it's full abilities. I use to make toolpaths with pencil and paper 30 years ago. X7 gets the job done, but not investing in the cheapest part of the equation in today's manufacturing with up to date software will at some point hurt them.

  5. Yes since your using a Robot you need to get in the habit of drawing your motion you want to follow verses hitting the easy button. Surfaces are only as good as the way they were saved and imported in. If you want to follow precise edges then work with them and not surfaces. Doing that by their very nature are not accurate unless all the work pre and post to work with them is done.

  6. I don't have anything as old as X7 installed, but simply regenerating this path with no changes, in 2018 and up, gets rid of this hump.

  7. its probably the cut tolerance on the cut pattern page, try .0001 instead of .001 for the toolpaths cut tolerance. i couldn't really see the problem very well in your file even with zooming way in so i couldn't tell if it fixed it but i think that cut tolerance is what effects the accuracy so it will probably fix the issue.,

  8. You might run into problems with this method as there is no tip offset control for the surfaces using 3D contour. 3D contour is best used in a situation where you are cutting a 2D profile but want to vary the z depth to ensure complete cleanup if the z -ve limit of the part varies more than the LOC of the cutter. In this case the tip is in "air" and will not gouge due to lack of tip offset control. If you want to control gouging efficiently here it would have to be a surfacing prog which has tip offset.

  9. What is happening here is that there's a sliver of air region from the extension off of the middle jaw island that exists beyond the lefthand machining region: Air region extents are automatically sized based on the diameter of the tool selected, and that sliver is being created as part of the air region extents of this chain, perpendicular to the chain edges: Since the toolpath has no knowledge of any geometry except what we're feeding it for chains, it sees that sliver as a valid air region. A solution is to simply add the top left jaw face as an avoidance region to eliminate the air sliver, which gives you this: The ability to add multiple air regions also adds quite a bit of complexity in how overlapping regions are dealt with, so avoidance regions start to become more necessary to control motion around and between the desired areas. Hope this helps!

  10. Hi, i changed some parameters in your 2D HSM toolpath to show you how it works: - removed solid face from 'avoidance regions' (associated this solid face in linking parameters to drive tool tip) - added a containment region chain Test_8_26_19-mod.zip

  11. Surface Finish Project. Like Leon, I use a 2D path, and project the path. Make a Surface from each solid face, so you can extend the surface. In order to get full entry/exit motion, there must be a 'surface' to project onto.

  12. Surface project. I like to use the old one and chain a contour and project the nci and gohst out the 2d path New project I've had the entire geometry group disappear so I don't bother with it anymore.

  13. Peter, I can't back before 2018 to see what your exactly referring to, but think I have come up with what we can do in 2020 to get as close a possible to that. Here is the QAT for me it is the point from the ribbon and then the drop down for point.
