drilling 2/3 of a hole

Anybody have any ideas on how to make these .5 holes 4" deep in 310 stainless?

Drill and ream the first one> press a rod into the hole> drill the second one> pull the rod out of the hole.

 

A buddy of mine does this with 2 inch diameter holes 20+ inches deep.

I'm guessing the rod has to be pressed in pretty tight so it doesn't spin. Do you have any problem pulling the rod out?

Correct on the fit.

 

We have used rods with an ID thread that we then screw in a T handle to. This gives the ability to pull it out easier.

What about a core drill? a 3 flute self centring drill might have enough web in contact to drill straight on the second hole without needing to plug the first???

I thougt about that Bruce, but I am not sure with that L x D if would work. I was going to cut a rest peice ant try it. We may just end up wiring the second hole anyway. I will report back.

Then this must be thru holes..I would look at the possibility of going 2 inches deep and flip over and come from the other side using carbide end mills to finish.
