Optimization

If I choose to run a 3-D program that is actually slower with High Speed Machining in V8 as far as run time, my only benefit then would be that the progam optimization would give me a better finish and be less stressful on the tooling. Am I correct in my thinking? HJ

More often than not High Speed Machining programs are HUGE when compared to "conventional" programs. In certain instances, run times can be longer but the surface finish is generally better.

Filtering(Arc, NURBS, 3D Arcs, etc...) Software such as Metacut http://www.metacut.com can drastically reduce file size AND improve surface finish. It's only drawback is in the initial cost. It pays for itself very rapidly in less "bench work" after machining and faster cycle times. Arc motion will give you faster travels (IPM/MPM) than point to point motion because of block processing time which is an entirely more complex issue.

The advantage to running HSM toolpaths are generally less stress on the machine tool, less stress on tooling/cutters, and consequently better surface finishes.

Just my 2¢

Well if you're asking did my tools break? No they did not. Did I get an outstanding part? Yes. Was there a whole lot of code? You betcha! Do I/would I use them on a regular basis? Most definitely. Can I use conventional cutting methods when cutting material in excess of Rc 45 and higher? I'll just say I wouldn't want to see the tooling bill and leave it at that.

Would I dump RS-232 in a heartbeat in favor of a Fanuc Dataserver to store all thouse huge programs? Without a doubt.
