A good article on hard turning.

Recommended Posts

Hi Crazy Millman,

I helped in the development the Hard Turning, Boring and Facing of gears back in the mid 80's for Mercury Marine. At that time we use ceramic tooling and a pin plate with jaws to hold the gears on the lathe. The savings were astronomical over grinding. We used cubic boron nitrides (CBN) inserts to face off the teeth of the gears. At that time the cost of (CBN) tooling was very expensive. So we only used (CBN) for interrupted cutting and over welded steel and stainless steel. From the looks of the article things have really changed. I enjoyed reading the article it was very good. Thank you for sharing it with us.
