machining colmonoy

Recommended Posts

i have some steel bars with a 1/16 deep x 7/8 wide groove machined into both sides.the groove has colmonoy applied in it.the parts were ground to the finish width after the coating was applied and now i have to do some close tolerance milling going right through the hardfacing.anyone have any experience with this?

google searching this turned up very little except that "this is the nastiest overlay there is "and that grinding it is just as difficult as machining it.

i also found that a good starting point is around 20sfm.

any help or insight into tooling is greatly appreciated.

thanks

mark
