c-axis engraving

Hi everyone, I am trying to engrave a shaft with mastercam x5 lathe lvl 1 on the c-axis. I have looked though all the forums and can't find anything close to this. when i put a path to it and verify it tries to cut the part off instead of staying on top and engraving. I had this problem on the faces but corrected it by playing with the planes. I will attach a file of the problem shaft. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

did that come out looking right to you? i only end up with half the engraving

With the verify tolerance and only .002 deep plus the stl tolerance, it can look strange.

I did get a finer result unrolling the geometry though
