air cuts

Hey guys,

Having some trouble w/ air cuts (using Lathe level 1). I am rough drilling a 1.75 dia flat bottom hole (w/ 1.25 dia flat ended insert drill) to .003 from the bottom. When I try to rough bore the hole up to size it gives me 8 short air cuts like it's trying to clean up the bottom surface even though I have .01 in the "Z stock to leave" box. Does anyone know of a way I can force the rough tool to not make these air cuts?

End your bore toolpath at just past the dia of the drill...

oh boy, it could be a few things.

 

select only the line that defines the bore geometry (single)

 

cut paramter should be sleected as straight line

Look at your "Lead-out" settings

Instead of chaining just a horizontal line. the floor of the bore (Vertical) Break that line just past the diameter of the drill, chain the horzontal and the vertical. Also Stock recignition should detect material removal.

I've tried selecting just the wall, the wall and the floor (w/ floor line broken just inside drilled area), and just the floor. All of these gave the same result (a bunch of air cuts).

GOT IT!!!

I selected "disable stock recognition" and that took care of the problem.

If it were me I would leave the stock recognition on.

 

I will assume you have picked the bore and bottom face as your chain. If this is so, go into the lead in/lead out window, click the lead out tab, click extend/shorten end of contour box, click shorten, input .626 in the amount field, ok, ok, regen and voila. That should do you right.

Thanks for the advice. I ended up going w/ your idea and it seems to be working fine. I guess I'll have to file that one away in the old memory banks for next time around.
