Machining Contours?...

Hi Everyone,

I'm about to begin a new project that will require I do something I've never done before. Now before your minds run wild, I'm talking about maching a 2.5d surface.

Here's the scoop. I want to machine a guitar neck and body. For example, on the back of the neck, the width at the end would be 43mm wide with a boat shape, at the heel, the width of the neck would be 55.5mm. I'm at a total loss on how to draw this and then have the router profile the neck.

On the guitar body, instead of having a top surface on one plane, I want to have the upper rear section taper to allow a comfortable place for you arm to rest.

I know how to do all of this on manual machines but I have never attempted to draw something in 3d or machine in 2.5d. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Chris Robinson

Up to this point, all of my experience has been with 2d cabinet parts.

Hi chris, Without seeing it it's hard to understand exactly what your trying to do. Can you draw a 2d cross section of what you want to machine and put some dimensions on it ? With this we can model it in 3d for you then maybe extract the contour you want to machine.
