tool extenders

Hello all,

I'm looking to improve on a what we use for tool extensions here. We are currently using a 5/8" diameter solid tool extension and the nosepiece (covernut) uses a spanner wrench setup to tighten it up this is the problem area. The operaters keep going through these wrenches like crazy. Got any suggestions for a solid tool extension that uses a standard wrench to tighten them up. thanks in advance

I don't know what sizes your looking for but we use milling extensions for our smaller endmills 1/4" shank and smaller either Accupro or Robbjack.

Available thru MSC and others

You didn't mention what type of holder you're having problems with. My guess is a collet type and I'm thinking its with the ER high speed nut? Every place I've been that uses these has people that don't know how to use the spanner. I find the damage comes from people using the wrench as a 'pickle fork' for the collet, causing the damage. If its a C spanner, then they're just over tightening the nut to begin with, ruining the wrench when trying to remove the nut. Or using an improper sized collet for the tool, causing the collet to jam itself.

You can get a Hex nut for these exensions, just keep in mind they're bigger on the diameter at the tool end.

Other extensions I use are Precision Components, Sandvik Corogrip, Accuhold (by AB tools), and end mill extensions from Lyndex/Nikken.

We have a Techniks 3/4-in diameter extension with an ER16 collet. The wrench is a 5 fingered type that fits into the grooves of the nut. It's difficult to get a good grip and easy to slip off when tightening. We've only gone through a couple of wrenches in the last 3yrs though.

I've always thought a couple of wrench flats would give a more positive grip, especially since these nuts don't require a lot of torque (~20ft-lbs.)

Thanks guys I think it is just the bone heads on the floor not cleaning the stuff out of the collets and overtightening the nut we are using the Techniks 5/8" diameter extention like wildcat is. I'm going to look at some of these suggestions and see if I can find a better nut setup I think that is what is giving them their problem.
