We retired a 1982, same model, several months ago and it could not, compression tapping only.

 

Matsuura's themselves are terrific machines, box ways, tough as hell and will generally hold tight tolerances all day.

 

But, that is a 25 y/o machine and even if it was well maitained it still seems to me it will probably be a tired machine.

Yasnac controls are the ball$, even old ones and Matsuura made the finest machine in the world in that era; still do make the finest milling machines in my opinion. VERY unlikely that the machine will rigid tap but our 1982 Matsuura 760 taps all day long with tension holders.
