Multi-Step Chamfers

If anybody was wondering what I am doing for this app, it's a bore (on and arc), 3.75" diameter. The customer want a .031" x 45deg. bevel at the lowest section of the bore. So, I am using a 45deg 3 flute insert cutter and contouring the holes, but as said above, I don't have enough insert length to get that .031 x 45... so I think I need to multistep it. Just thought this might help.

You could use depth of cut on the tool.

You might need to combine stock on with DOC to walk it into the correct position.

You can also use in the Lead In/Lead Out page, the adjust start of contour/adjust end of contour to cut only the area you want too.

I presume your just refering to the depth of cut check box, John? If so, I have done that, only to aleiviate

More clarification; Since my insert is not long enough to cut the entire 45, I will need 1 pass at (example only!) 1.5"R, and the next (lower cut) would be at (per say) 1.25"R to blend with the first. The first would leave a step cause the bottom of the insert would be inside the part wall, the second (lower) cut would be in the bore itself, and blending with the first cut with the mid to upper section of the insert.

Make sense?

For stepping in, you can use the multi pass option.

Set the # of roughing passes you want to take along with the amount of stock you want to cut in each pass, set a finish pass at say .01 and click on the bottom where it says at machine finish passes at all depths.

Now it will rough all the passes and go back and run the finish passes at the fianl machining #'s
