break question

Ok, this has been bugging me for a while, and tech tips seems to be no help, so here goes. I seem to only be able to break an entity at an intersection, or into a number of even sized pieces, auto cursor has no effect. I would like to be able to break an entity where I want to without having to create needless geometry. Any suggestions. Version X of course.

once in trim, press the break button AND press the "trim to point" button.

In the trimming function, makes sure you're set to "break":

 

and "to point" in depressed:

 

 

Then you can sketch the point with your mouse and break it where you want.
